Bigg Boss Season-5 (India): TV review Housemates

There are 14 housemates invited to live in the Bigg Boss house in its 5th season, hosted by Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. These 14 inmates are consisting of 13 female and one male celebrity contestants. It is obviously done to make the show glamorous and score a higher TRP.


Here is the brief information about the housemates in alphabetical order:


Amar Upadhyay (proposed to be inducted):
Amar Upadhyay, 35, Indian, TV and film actor. In 1994, His photographs appeared in Stardust magazine, on seeing which Jaya Bachchan offering him a TV series Dekh Bhai Dekh This was followed by numerous TV series like, Arzoo, Suhana Safar, Tulsi, Kalash and Aruna Irani's Mehndi Tere Naam Ki. Eventually, he earned fame in 2000 with Ekta Kapoor's mega TV soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000). When his character Mihir ‘died’ in 2001, it was followed by protest marches and the TV channel’s head office was flooded with phone-calls and letters, eventually his character returned back to the serial.

 Gulabo Sapera:
Gulabi, Kalbelia, 45, Indian is a  dancer from Rajasthan,  has a Jazz band with Titi Robin and teaches in Copenhagen, Denmark. She broke age-old traditions when took her culture on-stage at the age of 12, which was heavily promoted by the Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She is married to a foreigner, whom she converted in to a Kalbelia and has five children.

Juhi Parmar:
Juhi Parmar, 31, Indian,  was born on 14th December 1980 in Ujjain to Devendra and Hemlata Parmar. She grew up in Jaipur, Rajasthan where she won the Miss Rajasthan title in 1999 and has been a TV personality, anchor, actress, Television Presenter, singer and dancer. She is married to television personality and businessman Sachin Shroff.

Laxmi Narayan: 
Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, 32, Indian is an transgender activist of international repute. She holds the distinction of being the only Hijra in the UN’s Civil Society Task Force on HIV/AIDS. She also works for the community through her campaign group ‘Astitva’. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, she stays in Thane. He Was a part of Reality Shows like 'Sach ka Saamna' and 'Raaz Pichle Janam Ka'. Won Salman Khan's heart by her immense contribution to the hijra community.

Mahek Chahal:
Mahek Chahal, 32, hailing from Norway is an Indian actress and model. She was born on February 1, 1979 in Norway. Belonging to a Punjabi-Sikh origin, she made her Bollywood debut in 2003 in the film ‘Nayee Padosan’. She has appeared in famous television commercials for leading brands like Godrej Refrigerator, Fevicol, Bombay Dyeing, Bar One Chocolate and many others.  

Mandeep Bevli:
Mandeep Bevli, Indian worked as an anchor with Headlines Today, specifically in entertainment related news. Her firebrand temperament and imposing personality keep her in memories of the people who meet her. 

Nihita Biswas (evicted):
Nihita Biswas, 22, Nepalese, is a lowyer by Profession. She became a celebrity after she married bikini killer Charles Sobhraj on October 9, 2008 inside the jail premises in Kathmandu where Sobhraj is presently lodged. Nihita’s mother – Shakuntala Thapa is Sobhraj’s criminal lawyer. 


Pooja Bedi:
Pooja Bedi, 41, indian is a Bollywood actress and television talk show host. Her parents are famous celebrities. Her father Kabir Bedi is an actor who acted in Bollywood and Hollywood movies.  Her mother Protima Bedi was one of the most famous Indian classical dancers. She was married to Farhan Furniturewala and has two children Aalia and Omar. She was born in Mumbai and studied at Lawrence School, Sanawar. She made her debut in Jag Mundhra’s 1991 film, Vishkanya. She participated in some reality shows before. She is a columnist with publications and manages a charitable organization called ‘The Grassroots Foundation’.

Pooja Missra:
Pooja Missra, 27, Indian, a model and VJ, hosted talk shows and a Page-3 socialite. She has earlier participated in other reality show like The Big Switch on UTV Bindass, dominating attitude led to multiple fights with other participants.

Raageshwari Loomba:
Raageshwari Loomba, 39, Indian, was born on 25 July 1972 and is a pop singer, actress, model, television anchor and former MTV VJ. She was born in Mumbai to National Award winning musician Trilok Singh Loomba and his wife Veera. She did her schooling from Auxilium Convent High School. She has released many successful music albums and performed at numerous stage shows all over the world. From 2000-2001 she was diagnosed with and overcame Bell’s Palsy (partial paralysis).

Shakti Kapoor:
Shakti Kapoor,53, Indian actor  was born on 3rd September 1958. He is well known for playing villainous characters in his specific comic style. He was born in Mumbai and grew up in New Delhi and studied in Kirori Mal College. His father had operated tailoring business in Connaught Place, New Delhi. He has acted in over 700 films and won Filmfare award once, for David Dhawan’s Raja Babu. He is married to Shivangi and has a son Siddhant who is an assistant director in film industry and a daughter Shraddha, an actress.

Shonali Nagrani:
Shonali Nagrani, 29, Indian, Television Anchor, Model, Actress was born on December 20, 1981 in an army officer’s family in New Delhi. She won Miss India International the pageant in 2003 and subsequently stood first runner-up of Miss International. She is also known as a model and television anchor who notably hosted the Cricket Indian Premier League (IPL) shows for Sony TV India and ITV. She also appeared in supporting roles in films like ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’. She studied at Good Shepherd English School, Bagdogra and graduated from the National School of Drama. 

Shraddha Sharma:
Shraddha Sharma, 27, Indian, model and actress, is an actress and model and best known for her tumultuous relationship with Raja Chaudhary.

Sonika Kaliraman (Left the house on medical ground with mutual consent): 
Sonika Kaliraman, 25, is the only Indian professional woman wrestler and daughter of legendary wrestler Padma Shree, Arjuna Award winner Master Chandgi Ram. She is the first woman Bharat Kesari title-holder and 10 times National Wrestling Champion. She married NRI Siddhart Malik in February 2009 and is settled in California, USA. She and her brother Jagdish have emerged among the best wrestlers in India. 

Vida Samadzai:
Vida Samadzai, 33, model and actress from Afghanistan was born on February 22, 1978. She was born and raised in Khost province of Afghanistan, and moved to America in 1996. She speaks five languages, including Hindi, fluently. She was the Winner of Miss Afghanistan Pageant 2003, although her title was not officially recognized. The Afghan Supreme Court condemned her participation in the Miss Earth beauty pageant on the basis of Afghan / Islamic traditions that restricts public display of female body. The orthodox Afghan social organizations specifically objected to her appearance in a red bikini.
